How the calculator works
Methodology and limits
The scenario tool compares annual energy costs only. It estimates gasoline cost as annual miles divided by miles-per-gallon, multiplied by gasoline price. It estimates EV energy as annual miles divided by miles-per-kWh, multiplied by a blended electricity rate.
Uses the electricity price entered by the visitor.
Uses 2.15 times the entered home price as a planning assumption. This is not a claim about every network or location.
Weights home and public assumptions by the public-charging share entered by the visitor.
Data sources
For general context we refer visitors to the U.S. Energy Information Administration for residential electricity price series and to AAA for gasoline price reporting. The calculator’s initial figures are examples, not live quotations. Use your utility bill and local fuel price for a decision-ready scenario.
What is excluded
Vehicle price, trade-in value, financing, insurance, registration, maintenance, charging equipment, taxes, incentives, and depreciation are outside this energy calculation. Those costs may outweigh energy savings in either direction.
Update policy
We review methodology whenever a source changes or readers identify a meaningful limitation. Material formula changes will be explained here.
