A source-first checklist for total ownership cost
Monthly payment is not total cost. The purpose of this checklist is to make missing information visible before you compare vehicles. It does not predict a resale value or guarantee savings.
Purchase and financing
Use the written out-the-door offer rather than the advertised starting price. Keep the vehicle configuration, taxes, fees, incentive conditions, down payment, annual percentage rate, and loan term in one record. If an incentive is not confirmed for your location and tax situation, label it as uncertain rather than subtracting it.
Energy and fuel
For a gasoline vehicle, use several real fill-ups to establish a baseline. For an EV, use the exact trim's efficiency figure and your home/public charging scenarios. Both results should state mileage and price dates.
Insurance, registration, and maintenance
Ask for quotes for both vehicles before deciding. Registration rules and insurance pricing are local. Maintenance estimates should separate scheduled items from unpredictable repairs; neither should be presented as a certainty.
Charging equipment and access
Obtain a written quote if a home circuit or charger installation is needed. If you rent or live in a shared building, confirm permissions and recurring fees in writing. Access constraints can be more important than a small difference in electricity price.
Decision record template
- Item and amount
- Source link or document
- Date checked
- Whether the amount is certain, estimated, or excluded
A comparison is ready to discuss when another person can reproduce the major inputs without guessing what each number means.
